“I went to the hospital six months ago and I was told that I had HIV. I don’t have money for treatment so I decided that I would not die alone. I started mixing my blood with the zobo I make to sell to many people…”
Wickedness is a profound evil committed consciously and of free will. It is the advanced form of evil. This is exactly what a lady confessed to on Wednesday night, 9th November 2022 during a radio programme called “Market Runs” on Wazobia FM. The presenter called for Nigerians to call in and say bad things they did which they are not proud of. To everyone’s amazement, an unknown lady called in to confess how she injects her blood into the zobo drink that she sells. As bad as it sounds, the woman’s HIV-positive status makes it worse.
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
(Genesis 6:5)
Hibiscus drink popularly known in Nigeria as zobo drink is an ox-blood or red wine-coloured drink made from dry petals of the roselle plant (Hibiscus sabdariffa). It is a rich and natural health drink filled with enormous benefits. It is affordable and people like it a lot.
In the woman’s exact words, she said:
“I went to the hospital six months ago and I was told that I had HIV. I don’t have money for treatment so I decided that I would not die alone. I started mixing my blood with the zobo I make to sell to many people. I extracted my blood with syringe and mix it in the zobo… I was a nurse before but when I was confirmed HIV positive, I had to stop. I am not happy with what I have done but I am happy that I will not die alone. I have been doing it for six months now and I pray God will forgive me.”
While everyone condemns this wicked act, the chairman of Nigeria Medical Association, Ogun State Chapter, Dr Azim Kunle Ashimi, on Thursday 10th November 2022 cleared the air to reduce panic. He said Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) could not be transmitted outside the human body. In his exact words, he said, “HIV cannot survive well outside the human body. If it is mixed with treated water, the virus will not survive. If you examine the zobo drink itself, it has its own acidity and putting HIV-positive blood in it will only neutralize the potency of the virus.” Speaking further, Dr Ashimi stressed that HIV cannot even be transmitted through saliva, especially when the affected person kisses a partner or relative.
